What does Companies House do?

Companies House is an Executive Agency of the department of Trade and Industry. Its main purpose is to receive and maintain the records of registered companies, and to make the information contained in those records available to the public. It also exercises some statutory discretionary powers on behalf of the secretary of State for Trade and Industry, particularly in respect of company and business names.
